As audience research for my music magazine I produced a questionnaire and put it online for people to answer. The results of this questionnaire will help me to narrow down what my actual magazine will be about. Overall I gathered results from 23 people.

For question one I asked how often people read magazines. The most popular answer was 'less than once a month', with 7 people choosing this answer. The second most popular answer was 'once a week' with 6 people choosing it. Nobody went for 'twice a week'. The other results were 1 vote for 'more than twice a week', 4 votes for 'Once a month' and 5 votes for 'Once a fortnight'. I will use these results as well as the results for four to determine how often my magazine will be released.

The second question that I asked in my questionnaire was 'Have you ever bought a music magazine'. The results were that 15 people had bought one before and 8 hadn't. This tells me that the majority of the people I asked who fitted into my target audience had bought a magazine which suggests that they would be willing to buy my music magazine.

The third question that I asked was what people would like to see in a music magazine. I allowed people to choose more than one answer so that I could tell more accurately what ones were more popular. The answer that the most people chose was 'interviews', with 20 people choosing it. The second most popular feature was 'behind the scenes content' with 17 people choosing that one. The other results were, 12 for posters, 11 for reviews, 12 for gig info, 5 for competitions, 15 for new music and 9 votes for articles on past bands/musicians. I also allowed for the option 'other' where people could leave an idea of there own. One person did this and suggested 'articles on movie sountracks. I will use this information to help me to decide what content my magazine will consist of. Even though I won't be producing a whole magazine I can include them on the contents page. From this set of results I feel I should include all of the options as they all had a fair amount of people choosing them. I probably won't include articles on movie soundtracks as only one person chose this. Even though it's a good idea it doesn't really fit with the type of music magazine mine will be.
The fourth question I asked was how often people would be willing to buy a music magazine if it appealed to them. The most popular answer was weekly with 7 people choosing it. 6 people put that they'd buy one monthly, 5 people chose fortnightly and the last 5 chose bimonthly. Taking the results to this question into consideration and the results to question one I feel that it would either be best for my magazine to be weekly, as that got the highest in this question and the second highest in question one, or fortnightly.

The fifth question I asked was how people get there music. Again I allowed for people to choose more than once answer The majority of people answered that they download via iTunes, amazon etc with 17 people opting for this one. The next most popular answer was 'illegitimate ways' with 14 people choosing it. 11 people chose 'purchasing CDs' and 10 people chose 'from friends, family etc'. I included this question in my questionnaire to see if people were actually willing to buy there music as there will most likely be advertisements for music in the magazine and if people are just going to illegally download it there wouldn't be much point. Also I want to know if the audience i'm aiming my magazine at like music enough to buy it, as this means that music means a lot to them so this allows me to know my target audience better.

The sixth question in my questionnaire asked how many gigs/concerts the people had attended. The answer that got the majority of votes was 1-2 with 6 people choosing it. The next most popular answers were 3-4 and 5-8, with 5 votes each. The results to this give me an insight into the people in my target audience so I know a bit more about them and how to appeal to them

The seventh question I asked was what do people buy the most out of, CDs, DVDs, Clothes, Electronic Devices, Games and Other. The answer that people chose the most was clothes, with 15 people choosing it. The next most popular answer was DVDs with 11 people choosing it. 4 people chose electronic devies and then two people chose CDs, Games and Other. The two answers that people put for 'other' were books and 'Blu-rays,MP3s'. This question will help with what would need to be advertised in the magazine and also give me further insight into the target audience.

The eighth question that I asked on my questionnaire was 'Would you say music is a big part of your life?'. A massive 21 of the people that answered the questionnaire chose 'yes' music is a big part of their lifes. Only 2 people chose no.
This question is another one which gives me insight into the minds of the people that I want the magazine to target so I'll be able to use this knowledge when developing my magazine further.

The final question that I asked on my questionnaire was what kind of music do the people listen to. I kept the genres narrow and not very broad to fit the type of genre I'd already planned to do my magazine about. The results were as follows, Rock (5), Indie (7), Metal (0), Alternative (5), Punk (0), Pop/Rock (4) and Other (2). From looking at these results the most popular genres out of the ones I put were Indie, Rock and Alternative. I will base my magazine mostly on these genres then as they seem to be the most popular.

From gathering this research I have decided my target audience will be male and females who are in the age range of teens to late twenty year olds. I will aim the magazine at the people who fit into this age range and who are avid music fans  and people who say music is a big part of their lives. The target audience will also be people who attened gigs and spend money on music related things. The magazine won't cover the whole of music it will cover specific genres such as Indie, Alternative and Rock as these appear to be the most popular genres. As the majority of my chosen target audience is in the age where they wouldn't personally have an income I feel that they don't really fit into groups such as ABC1s as they just cover the income of the main earners in a house and don't tell you how much money my target audience would have to spend. The target for my music magazine would be unique people who don't follow the mainstram and think for themselves. They don't care about the latest clothes however they would care about the latest music playing devices, as music is their passion.
